What are the indents above the wheel on the deck for?

The indents in the deck are called wheel wells. These are cut into the deck to prevent your wheels from catching on the deck and biting when you turn. The wheel wells allow the trucks to turn a little more sharply because they give the wheels a little bit of additional clearance from the deck.
